October 2011

Led by a dominating swim team, the USA team earned 50 medals at the 2011 Summer Games in Shenzhen, China, to place 5th in the world.

The 50 total medals is the highest by a USA team since 1999. "Simply stated, it was a great effort by our student-athletes," said Gary Cunningham, former director of athletics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and current president of the United States - International University Sports Federation (US-IUSF) Board of Directors.  "The 279 U.S. student-athletes who participated not only performed well in competition, but they also represented our country in a manner that would make all U.S. citizens proud.  It is these types of events that make international sports such a unique and educational opportunity for those who are fortunate enough to experience it," added Cunningham.

Over 150 countries participated in the games that involved approximately 10,000 athletes and coaches.  The host country, China, finished first winning over 100 medals.

In addition to winning 28 medals in men's and women's swimming, the USA team won medals in the following sports:

Women's basketball - 1
